This urban garden hideaway was designed to work hard for it’s money. Predominantly designed as a photographer’s work space, our client’s family were soon in on the act - providing a traditional hammock from his native El Salvador for himself and cinema screen, potion room and den for their children. The exterior is clad in charred douglas fir timber, which was chosen for it’s appearance and longevity

Worth noting:

1.

Shou-Sugi-Ban is the process of charring the surface of timber (most often cedar). This helps to form a waterproof surface, but also enhances the grain and beauty of the wood itself. The finished result is called Yakisugi

2.

Beyond the outside 4 walls, the internal space of a Houtt cabin can be tailored to your own requirements - in this project, as well as the main space, there is also a shed area with separate access, ‘secret’ potion room and large bespoke shelving wall

3.

Our client opted for a sedum roof which is now a haven for wildlife. Another benefit being that this helps to hide the cabin from neighbouring properties
